THE TRUTH ABOUT SALT AND CHLORINE
I just didn’t know. I didn’t know that chlorine is so damned unhealthy. I mean it makes sense. Chlorine makes my eyes burn like hell which is basically my body telling me to please stop exposing my eyes to this horrible chemical. Now if you ask a pool pro about your eyes burning they will give you a very well crafted response as to why it is nothing to worry about but it doesn’t take a GED to figure out that chlorine is really bad for your eyes. It’s also bad for your pool. In fact, my beautiful new pool liner was bright blue when it was installed and just two years later it was almost white. It had been bleached out by the chlorine in the water.
SALT SYSTEMS AREN’T CHLORINE FREE
I thought that I was exchanging chlorine for salt. That somehow salt was doing the sanitizing in the water. But that’s not true! The salt is simply there in order to generate chlorine molecules in the water. This really pissed me off. Because now I’m swimming in salt and chlorine…both harsh and unhealthy chemicals that are bad for my body and my pool. For example, one of the joints in the plumbing above my pool pump developed a pinhole leak which dripped salt water onto my pump and literally rusted it completely through the motor in less than a month. And don’t even get me started on the damage it caused to my $4000 heater. The heat exchanger was gone in two years. My pool builder says that the salt water is actually healthy but my doctor disagrees.
DRINKABLE POOL WATER SYSTEMS
If only I had known! Actually I did. This system was quoted in the original quote from my pool builder but it was crazy expensive…like $5900. But looking back I could have saved a lot of money if I would have had the drinkable system installed on my new pool. I never would have had to replace my pump ($900) or my heater ($4000). I would have saved $4900 in damages. But here’s the deal…I paid $2000 for the salt system which I wouldn’t have paid so I would have only been spending an extra $3900 plus a filter is included with the drinkable pool water system so I would have not had to purchase the $1000 filter I had put on my new pool. So really I would have spent an extra $2900 and I would have been swimming in healthy water the whole time and my liner would still be pretty. The drinkable system doesn’t cause color fade on pool liners because there is no chlorine in the water.
