The following four types of swimming pool filters are listed from least effective to most effective:
- High-Rate Sand Filter: Uses sand media to filter the pool water. Most can filter down to 15 microns (not great).
- Cartridge Filter: Uses a cartridge much like the air filter in your car to filter the pool water. Most can filter down to 10 microns (a little better). However, you must dis-assemble to clean. What a headache!
- DE Filter: Uses Diatomaceous Earth covered grids to filter the pool water. Filters down to about 5 mircons (pretty good). However, very expensive and grids easily break during cleaning.
- Glass Filter: Uses NSF-61 certified glass media to filter the pool water. Filters down to 2 microns (the best). Easy to cleanandonly needs to be cleaned once per month under normal conditions. Glass media lasts 8 to 10 years!
