Groundwater can cause huge amounts of damage to your swimming pool. If you have a solid shell pool such as a gunite or fiberglass pool there is potential for ground water to completely lift the shell out of the ground more than a foot and can even lift the concrete decking along with the pool shell. If you have a vinyl lined swimming pool groundwater can cause your liner to “float” and then when the source of the ground water recedes the liner will settle back into the wrong place causing wrinkles to occur. In the extreme cases, groundwater can even destroy your pool liner.
The best way to stop grounwater from damaging your pool is to have a good drainage plan when the pool is built and a sump drain as backup. A certified plumber can install a sump drain near your swimming pool which will pump the groundwater away from the pool when the pump detects rising groundwater. This type of solution doesn’t guarantee that you will never have groundwater issues again but it is effective for over 90% of the pool on which it is intalled.
If you own a home with a pool. The smartest thing you can do is to have a sump drain installed before groundwater damage occurs. If you wait until you have a groundwater issue it may be significantly more expensive to fix at that point.
